Several articles in pdf format on why and how iceboat sails work. ARTICLES     (posted Jan 4, 2007)

Summer, summer, summer, where art thou?

According to the temperatures so far (as of 15 June 09), summer just hasn’t arrived and my mind lapsed over the weekend to thoughts of the Gull Lake swap meet coming up in November.

I went out in the shop and dug around my wood pile to see what was available and could it be used for a project. With Bob Gray and Bill Cutting currently designing and building a prototype (inexpensive and easy to build) Opti DN over the past month, I decided to try something less intensive.

Aha, down in the stock pile I found a supply of 1/4” plywood and other miscellaneous sizes and quantities of 1/2” and 3/4” stock. So, now all I need to do is persuade my 9 and 12 year old grandsons from Grand Haven to build some iceboat accessory items to sell at this falls Gull Lake event. Perfect plan, they can have fun making iceboat stuff with grandpa and I will get my shop cleaned out a bit.

Looking around a little further revealed a two year old project covered up in a back corner, an unfinished sidecar for the Skeeter that just has to completed before hunting season starts on October 1st!

Shoot, Loretta just reminded me that the iceboat trailer better get the new wood on it, be painted, and moved out of the back yard really soon, or I just might not see our forty seventh anniversary in September…………..

You know what, who needs summer weather anyway, other than it does provide a nice break for everyone to get repairs and new construction projects finished before the ‘hard water’ returns. While your at it, don’t forget to grease your stored runners.

See you on the ice, Corey

Because ice and sailing conditions change so rapidly and the cost of gas makes it extremely difficult to drive all over the state looking at lake conditions, GTIYC has begun to develop a free “Yahoo Groups” site for everyone in Michigan to gather and share iceboating  information in as timely a manor as possible.

Sign up for free and keep in touch with all Michigan iceboaters!

Report known or suspected ice and sailing conditions in your area, or where and when you or your group plan to sail.

Post your sailing photos for your friends and fellow sailors to enjoy.

Join in on topics for discussion or start your own topic.

Join your friends and let’s open the communications channel across all of Michigan.

Iceboating is a pretty small sport, so we need to work together to keep it as strong and unified as possible. Please join and help all of Michigan’s Iceboaters enjoy the sport as much as they can.             Click here for site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GTIYC/
